Heather it was a pleasure riding with you and I was very impressed how you took to the sport like a fish to water. The various incidents along the way reinforced my feelings on riding techniques and your ability to handle every challenge along the way convinced me that your finishing Tevis is a given. Now all you need is a good endurance horse. I happen to know where you can get one too.
Hello,
For any of you wondering about the beautiful headstall that Potato is selling; let me just say it is awesome! I rode several of Potatos' horses in only that headstall and never had a problem with it. I love it. It is gentle on the horse, it's super easy to put on and take off (no "cold bits" to coerce into the horses mouth) and it works as well as any bit. I ordered one for my own quarter horse and it's great.

Hi Potato,
It's been a long time since I posted anything on your website. I was getting over the fact that Tevis wasn't going to happen for me this year. I have learned so much, basically all I know, about the sport of endurance from you and want to thank you sincerely. I found a new joy and that I didn't really realize I was interested in. I learned that endurance isn't just being able to go the distance but also being able to adapt to and "endure" unexpected situations such as: inclimate weather, ride delays or cancellations, and even leaking tents! I've enjoyed and grown from every experience from april until July and I hope to get to ride more throughout the year. I had a desire once to try "an endurance ride" and now because of your great mentoring and your incredible horses (which totally spoiled me) I have to complete my mission. I acquired the 300 miles needed to qualify for Tevis under your training and now I need to conquer Tevis...'09 here I come..See you on the trail...TTFN Heather

It is hard to believe that is has been over a month already since I visited Sliger Mine Ranch on July 18th. The ride was cancelled, but we made the most of our trip from Ohio anyway. Was able to see much of Northern California - ok, I am envious that you all get to live in such a gorgeous place 24/7/365 - and now all I want to do is return next year. Potato's horses are worth seeing. I was especially impressed with Garcon, his stallion - the horse can MOVE. Looks like an awesome ride. And were I closer I would consider bringing Cammie home with me to ride here. She is a beautiful mare, carrying a foal that is sure to be an awesome endurance horse. Thanks for spending your time with my family for our visit. I plan on being there again in 2009 - FIRES, stay away! Renee

Here it is July 21st, 2008 the first Monday after Tevis 2008 was planned. Talk about the Monday morning blues or the morning after. I am sure there are a few hundred riders who had made plenty of plans for this years Tevis that are still in recovery from the shock of the cancellation of the ride. I certainly include myself in that category. Sunday morning I drove around the west side of the lake towards Squaw Valley and the sky was clear and the weather was beautiful. You certainly could not tell that there was a wild fire still raging in the area of the Tevis trail. Here in Cool, California the air this morning is clear and in spite of the fact that there were dozens of lightening strike over the week-end in the area above Foresthill most of the fires resulting from the lightening were quickly extinguished and the biggest one that caused the cancellation of Tevis 2008 is nearly completely contained. The fire season is not over yet and Tevis 2008 will long be remembered as the year that nobody won! However there are plenty of other great rides still on the calendar so keep riding!
Potato

I especially liked the information about properly posting in sync with your horse. Fascinating. Also information about tack, esp. girths - I have always avoided string girths; maybe I need to rethink them! And that "less is better" - good tips for ALL endurance riding, not just Tevis.

Today the smoke situation here in the Auburn area is as bad or maybe even worse then yesterday. The Western States 100 mile run was scheduled to be held this week-end and it has been cancelled for lots of reasons. Too much smoke and the possibility of more fires as well as the additional traffic that would result because of the run and the list list goers on and on. The weather predicted for this week-end is for even more challenging electrical storms. Next week in this same area the Gold Country 50 mile ride is scheduled. It too could very well be cancelled for the very same reasons. Although there are no fires near the trails for the Gold Country ride, the other situations are still in existence. So keep your eyes and ears close to the information source before you make any decisions to travel anywhere in California in the near future.

The entries are not coming in very fast for Tevis 2008; however I see and feel a lot of excitement for this year. At the moment there are wild fires burning up all over the state. I can say with a fair amount of certainly that if the ride was this today it could very well face a cancellation. It is hard to breathe outside let alone ride your horse in this smoke.
On a brighter note Heather Swanson who rode her first Endurance ride on April 5th this year now has 6 fifty mile rides on SMR Fifi d’Or, all in top ten and she is qualified to ride Tevis. Her last ride was Saturday June 21st and she was seconds behind me for second place finish at the Hat Creek Hustle. She and Fifi d'Or are having a great season and this is a good lead up to Tevis 2008 for her first Tevis ride and of course she will ride Fifi on Tevis.
